KEEP OUR VILLAGE CLEAN

The Parish Council is concerned about litter in and around our village. We have all seen discarded MacDonalds bags, seagull attacks on bin days, plastic blown into hedges etc.

To address this problem Cllr Jason Burley came up with the idea of engaging the children of the village to help. Jason on behalf of the Parish Council asked the school if they would engage the children in a competition to design a poster that the Parish Council could use to encourage us all to pick up litter and discourage the few litter louts who discard litter thoughtlessly.

All the pupils at Stithians School were invited to enter a ‘Keep our Village Clean’ Competition. The competition was announced in assembly and all ages were given the opportunity to enter. The competition was a homework style exercise and was entered by children in reception class – so 4/5 year olds up to Year 6 – 10/11 year olds. All 26 entries were given to the Parish Council to judge. The two winning entries were Brodie B In year 6 and Jazi D from year 4. Well done to all those children who entered. Thinking about keeping the village clean and rubbish free is a step away from it being a reality.

On Wednesday 14th June the Chairman was walking his dog and as he entered the Rugby field he was very pleased to find a very enthusiastic group of Beaver Scouts all eagerly picking up litter. In one evening, they collected a large bagful of litter from just the playing field and rugby field.

The Parish Council would like to thank all the children at the school who took part in the competition and particularly Jazi D and Brodie B for their winning entries. Look out for their posters around the Parish.

We would also like to thank the Beaver Scouts for their excellent example of taking up the challenge and doing something positive for the community. Let us all take our lead from the children of the Parish and Keep Our Village Clean.
